The object of a terrible prank, shy little Maggie Hansen is overwhelmed by Lance Castile who happens to be the first man she’s been exposed to other than her father. Their meeting becomes known when one of the pranksters sells their pictures to a popular gossip magazine. Even before their pictures appear in the paper, Lance must leave for six weeks training, and Maggie’s father kicks her out for coming home so late. Finding Maggie becomes the object of the police because they suspect she’s guilty of trying to blackmail Lance. His father certainly thinks she’s up to no good. However, Maggie is so afraid of being found and sent back home that she does everything she can to hide where she goes and who she is.

Lance is determined to find Maggie, especially after he learns what her life has been like. After several weeks, she is found almost by accident when posters on street poles show a drawing of her wearing the clothes she wore when last seen. But when Maggie learns they will be coming for her, she runs into Big Bend National Park where it takes search parties nearly a week to find her, and then she’s nearly dead. Maggie does not understand who is after her or why. When she finds out Lance is the one looking for her, she escapes every time she can until Lance finds her one last time and forces her to stay with him.

Maggie does not know what love is like or how touching and kissing are shows of affection. She fears these things and must learn from Lance that they are not bad. Until she can believe that Lance is not engaged like the papers said, and that is not trying to trap her into a life like her childhood, Maggie refuses to have anything to do with Lance, especially marry him. Lance must teach her what love and affection can be like – that he will never hurt her – that her living a life of pain has ended – that he will take care of her.
